Dials
The Naissance d'une Montre 3 features two distinct dials crafted in 18-carat white gold and hand-engraved. The first dedicated to displaying the hours and minutes is offset at 2 o'clock; while the other around the movement’s periphery is supported by pillars and displays the seconds. Typical of chronometers and regulators, the seconds display on the NM3 timepiece involves a long, distinctive hand sweeping around the dial rim.
Inspired by the design of Ferdinand Berthoud's Astronomic Pocket Watch No. 3, the hours and minutes dials display the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals. In the same spirit, they are paired with likewise differentiated hands: the one showing the minutes features a bevelled tip, while the hours pointer is arrow-tipped.
STEPS:
- The dial-making process involves a number of operations including milling, turning, marking, satin-brushing as well as hand-engraving the numerals and markers. Next the dial is trimmed and circular satin-finished, while its sides are polished. The dial surface is then protected by a varnish, before the inside of the engraved numerals and markers is blackened by chemically deposing a thin layer of nickel. The spoked wheels are cut out by milling on a jig boring machine. The copper-beryllium wheels are adorned with interior angles. They are then straight-grained and finely circular satin-finished, before being gilded and finally cut.
