Presentation box

The Naissance d'une Montre 3 presentation box is inspired by the watchmaking treatises written and published by Ferdinand Berthoud in the 18th century. It represents a continuation of the work of the Watchmaker-Mechanic by appointment to the French King and Navy. The case consists of two large books, housed in a calfskin-covered wooden slipcase embellished with embossed and gilded lettering and decoration.

Marked on their spines with the title "Naissance d’une Montre III", the two volumes are housed in a sheathed wooden slipcase bearing the "Ferdinand Berthoud" logo, enabling them to be displayed side by side on a bookshelf. The back of the slipcase features two openings protected by walnut wood rings enabling the volumes to be pushed with the fingers in such a way that they can be easily grasped.

The first volume is designed to hold the watch and the book you are currently perusing, describing the main stages in its production. The second volume contains the watch's certificates of origin, guarantee and chronometry, signed by Mr Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. It also contains a magnifying glass featuring exceptional workmanship in silver, a blue calfskin travel pouch, a USB stick shaped like a chain link with instructions for use and care of the watch translated into several languages, a high-quality cotton cloth for cleaning the watch and a pair of gloves.

The Naissance d'une Montre 3 presentation box is a true masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship. Made by one of Switzerland's last traditional bookbinders, it expresses impressive mastery of ancestral skills, combining wood and leather using ancient tools.

STEPS:

  • Once the design of the case has been defined, a precise plan is drawn up detailing the dimensions of each element and each interior and exterior compartment.
  • The Naissance d'une Montre3 case is made using noble materials such as maple wood for the rigid structure, full-grain calfskin leather for the outer lining and grey imitation suede leather, which meets REACH standards, for the lining of the inner compartments.
  • The production process begins by cutting the materials. The wooden structure treated with a water-based varnish and the cardboard outer box are then assembled. The exterior of the presentation box is then cased in leather, like a book binding. The spine of the book is hot-stamped with lettering and decorations, some of which are embossed and gilded.
  • The various compartments and moving parts are fitted with the utmost care, as they guarantee the perfect preservation of the watch and the accompanying elements. The case must be able to be placed both horizontally and vertically.

Magnifying glass

The exclusive magnifying glass created for the NM3 watch is made from noble, unalterable materials: 925 silver for the frame and European oak for the handle. The elements connecting the handle to the bezel, which enclose the lens, are enhanced by fluting inspired by the case's winding crown. The silver surround is finely hand-engraved with the words "Ferdinand Berthoud" and "Au temps qui instruit".

The high-quality sapphire crystal lens allows even the smallest details to be observed comfortably, without distortion.

STEPS:

  • With the exception of the lens, the magnifier is made entirely in-house by our artisans. The wooden handle is turned and the rings are milled to carve out the grooves. Once the engraving has been done by hand, all the components are carefully polished.
  • The body of the silver magnifier bears the various hallmarks and regulatory indications required by the Swiss Precious Metals Control Bureau.
