A name, a brand
Master watchmaker and chronometer-maker Ferdinand Berthoud made an indelible imprint on history with his fabulous creations, including the 18th century Marine Clocks that guided the vessels of the King of France towards new horizons. Today, while our purpose lies first and foremost in paying tribute to this exceptional artisan and his incredibly destiny, we also aim to exalt the very essence and the inherent fascination of the watchmaking art.
Our timepieces are direct heirs to the work of Ferdinand Berthoud. They are infused with the same ethos of innovation and precision, reinterpreted from a contemporary standpoint. FERDINAND BERTHOUD chronometers are a perpetual call to explore new horizons.
I am truly humbled and honoured to invite you to be part of this fascinating adventure.
A native of the Val-de-Travers region of Switzerland, Ferdinand Berthoud was an exceptional horologist, a true researcher perfectly embodying the spirit pervading the Age of the Enlightenment.
Ferdinand Berthoud, a man of refined tastes and strong character, as well as a skilled negotiator and talented writer, proved capable of navigating his way through the society of his time and reaching key positions. He published all the results of his experiments and became a benchmark in his field.
A scientist and engineer at heart, endowed with a gift for mechanics and a vast range of knowledge, Ferdinand Berthoud focused on experimental research and observation. Never short on innovations and consistently aiming for perfection, he constantly invented new technical solutions that served to explore and conquer new territories. The Marine Clocks represent the culmination of this quest.
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, President of Chronométrie FERDINAND BERTHOUD, is fascinated by the history of art and of watchmaking.
“Over the years, I have patiently collected some masterpieces of this horological genius and now intend to give a new lease on life to this exceptional heritage.” Established in Fleurier in the Val-de-Travers region that was the birthplace of the master-watchmaker, Chronométrie FERDINAND BERTHOUD offers exceptional timepieces distinguished by highly exclusive production.
Contemporary expressions of the work accomplished by this eminent horologist, FERDINAND BERTHOUD chronometers are driven by due deference for his remarkable accomplishments, resulting in modern and daring creations imbued with distinctive characteristics that are reinterpreted while evoking the emblematic constructions of yesteryear.
The clearly pursued objective is to offer incomparable watches that will prove worthy of the great name they bear and of the excellence legitimately inspired by Ferdinand Berthoud himself.
“Among the vast and wonderful productions of Mechanics, the Art of time measurement by clocks ranks first, as much for its usefulness as for the vast scope of its inventions”.
Ferdinand Berthoud, Histoire de la mesure du temps (…), (The history of time measurement…), Paris, 1802
Ever since the 18th century invention of the mechanical clock, watchmakers have constantly sought to improve the precision and exactness of their timepieces, thanks to the constant progress of science and the implementation of new technologies.
We therefore naturally wished to place our products in direct line with the work of FERDINAND BERTHOUD, while adopting a contemporary approach guided by the same spirit of innovation and accuracy instilled in his fabulous Marine Clocks. Imbued with ancestral horological expertise, the resolutely masculine and timeless FERDINAND BERTHOUD timepieces draw inspiration from the distinctive horological and mechanical character inherited from the eponymous founder.
Produced by the workshops of the Chronométrie FERDINAND BERTHOUD in Fleurier, at the heart of the Val-de-Travers, they enshrine the quintessence of the watchmaking art, loyal to the research-driven attitude of the master chronometer-maker. Just as Ferdinand Berthoud’s longitude watches were tested by the highest scientific authorities of the time, the rate precision of FERDINAND BERTHOUD movements is recognised and certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
